I think this is far too late for 1.4, given that we don't even have a
concrete design yet.

As far as I'm aware, Julian's message
(http://svn.haxx.se/dev/archive-2005-11/1383.shtml) from the last
time this was raised still represents the current state of the design.

Developing a document that answers the questions posed in that message
would be a very good starting-point for anyone who wants to see this
feature implemented.
