Graceful handling of Symbolic Links with Samba

Hello,
I've been trying to checkout a subversion repository on under Suse 10.0 with a mounted cifs/samba drive. The mounted drive is located on a Windows 2003 server and does not support symbolic links.
The problem is, I need to checkout from my linux machine onto this drive and I do have symbolic links in my repository. The checkout then fails with an "Operation not supported" error. To me, this is a very serious issue - it means I am unable to use subversion with symbolic links with my setup.
see my posting for more information:

I would like to file a bug report and suggest the following course of action:
A svn switch that can be used to treat the symbolic links as subversion would from a native windows machine - ie simply throw a copy of the file into the directory. This would give the user an override mechanism when subversion fails to recognise whether or not symbolic linking is supported.
