[Lots of complications using a wiki right now for the official svn
documentation...]

How about setting up a wiki seeded with the current docs, linking to it
from the official site, and periodically (maybe on a weekly basis)
checking in useful changes from the wiki to the repository via the
regular submission procedures?

Such a wiki could be maintained by a volunteer rather independent of the
offical project.

Just an idea.
