I quite deliberately did it in two commits, so that there was a single
revision clearly expressing the changes that need to be merged to the 1.3.x
branch.

I think a less-than-5-minute window of brokenness in order to provide a
clear diff to people reviewing the change for backport is a good tradeoff.
