Unless doing so would seriously contort a development effort, we
should always try to keep trunk buildable on all platforms, for
precisely the reason Max gave. Anyway, a reversion followed by an
unreversion+fix is not really so inconvenient -- "adds some noise",
yes, but that's about all it adds.
