Thanks Kouhei! Peter Lundblad has committed a fix for this problem and
a related memory leak in r15742. It's a good thing we fixed this bug,
because it was causing problems in commit_tests 38 as well.

Everything works great on my system now, so I have merged the changes
to the python-bindings-improvements branch in r15745.
