No, and I'm not sure how I overlooked it.

I actually ended up using '--mandir=${prefix}/share/man' so I could
build and install in a sandbox for testing (and making binary
tarballs for other local machines).

It would be nice if autoconf knew to do that by default on Mac OS X
(and RedHat 9 it seems to from other posts) but I have a workaround
and beggars can't be choosers...
