Ok, so let me get this straight.
You want to have a command named 'svnversion' and another one named
'svn version', with completely different purposes?
What are you trying to do, confuse your users deliberately?

Does anybody really think that it's useful?
Wouldn't it be more sensible to ask people to vote for keeping it in?
My gut feeling is that near to noone would, but how would I know.
How about:
1. Revert this weird hack
2. When somebody gets the time to do this right, implement a 'svn
version' that does what 'svn --version' does, but that supports an
URL. Add --version and -v as a wrapper that doesn't support URL,
seeing as it's basic Unix/whatever syntax and perhaps for backwards
compatibility.
3. And this one's important. At the same time, integrate the
'svnversion' tool in 'svn', and rename it to something else than
version! There's been a good bunch of names suggested earlier..
final note: Having both 'svnversion', 'svn version' and 'svn
--version' is almost hilarious :-)
just my 2c.
