I wouldn't be surprised if this was a side effect of NPTL's better
POSIX conformance. LinuxThreads implements many attributes which are
officially process-wide in a thread-specific fashion (e.g. effective
UID and GID).

So you should see the same behavior on Fedora and a 2.4 kernel with
NPTL support.
