I had the same problem trying to build 1.1.2 on Debian unstable with
gcc = 4:3.3.5-1, libtool = 1.5.6-2, autoconf = 2.59-8 and m4 = 1.4.2-1.

I saw further down in this thread that the user reported it was a
libtool problem and sure enough running

bash$ /usr/bin/autoreconf --force --install --symlink

cured the problem right up. Just wanted to pass that along in case
anyone else were similarly lost.
