There have been several sorts of formatting errors reported for the PDF output. Would you care to investigate whether the PDF-producing tools that we are using are from a project under active maintenance, whether this bug is has been reported, whether there is a later version available, etc.?

Indeed: this is a case where the book XML source is wrong, using double-quote characters directly when it should be using <quote>...</quote>. There are several such instances throughout the book. A patch would be welcome; for help finding them, see the script that I have just posted in a separate thread "BOOK: a heuristic anomaly-detection script".
