I have enscript installed, and the viewcvs configuration points to the
binary. This does not appear to be the problem I am seeing. Although the
problems might be related to viewcvs, as perusing the log files made me
aware that several web spiders have started to index the repository
recently. I have currently disabled all access via file: URLs (including
viewcvs), and currently all appears to work well. I keep my fingers
crossed.
