If there's "a good chance" that the server will terminate, then it
doesn't always terminate on protocol errors. (Actually, even under
normal operation, a client generates an "unexpected end of connection"
from the server's perspective.) I wonder if Windows has the equivalent
of Unix's SIGPIPE?
