Yup, I knew it wasn't unanimous either way. (Heck, I disagreed even
with myself.) The thing that swung it for me was the realization that

   a) This doesn't have to be a permanent decision, we're free to
      change if it doesn't work, and

   b) Since we can change, we should first try the solution that
      doesn't require the creation of a new object (the STATUS file)

Let's see what happens. The information being recorded is the same
either way, it's not like we could lose ground at any point.
