Since I can't add a comment to this issue, I just reply to 'everybody'
and hope the message gets read by the appropriate people.

I compiled the head revision and tried it out on Win98 just a few
minutes ago. The behaviour now is fine, no error getting UID. svn asks
fur username & password and upon success caches it for further actions.
I'd report issue #1470 as fixed :-)
