global-ignores & windows registry

I set global-ignores=*.class in the windows registry according to the
documentation, using:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Tigris.org\Subversion\Config\Miscellany\global-ignor
es.

but it didn't work, when I did an svn status the .class files were listed with
?.
if I set the svn:ignore property on the directory it works fine and doesn't show
the .class files
