This looks like a real bug. I'll repeat the tests here and see what happens.

I'm working on it, although veeery slowly. Maybe I can force myself to
finish this tonight -- although I've other fish to fry at the moment, as
I'm setting up automated tests on FreeBSD.

In any case, whatever I do will be written in Python (but without the
bindings, of course).
