Have you tried "rpm -Uvh zlib-1.1.4-4.i386.rpm"? That should do what you
want, which is to "upgrade" the zlib RPM. An "upgrade" installs the new
RPM and un-installs the old one, all in one operation.

Please let me know if this doesn't work for you.
