I suspect you are being too hard on yourself.
There's a mythology at work, about what counts as competing projects,
and what counts as success, and so forth. That mythology encourages
the kind of slips-into-sociopathy to which you refer. And in the open
source and free software industry, that mythology has a lot of
overtones. We are all vulnerable to that. Mostly, I think the right
attitude, or at least the best way forward, is "It's no big deal --
let's get back to tech."
