the weird thing was, when it wasn't working, apache *was* issuing the
challenge but windows didn't handle that correctly. forcing apache to
issue a challenge *sooner* (on read) makes it work.

just what i wanted to hear. :-/

actually, my employer probably would want to require authentication for
read access too, so if i can at least get *this* behavior to appear
consistenly inside my office, web folders may be just the ticket for our
graphic designers and content writers.
