I don't think your analysis is correct; for example, I have a working
copy of /trunk from svn.collab.net, and when I backdate to r5434
(which only changed /clients/rapidsvn) it works fine for me.

I think you need to give more detail: what version of the client and
server are you using? Show us an ethereal trace, so we can see the
invalid xml your client doesn't like.
