There used to be more than there are today. Say, ten years ago, nearly
every editor did something ugly about surprise line endings, and nearly
every compiler simply barfed and died. Even the blessed Emacs only
learned to be line-ending agile in v.19.

I'd agree it was time to review whether this is still necessary, only I
saw line endings kill off a compiler within the last six months. Not
quite a thing of the past, I'm afraid.
