Mac OS X: svn: cannot set locale

Hello,

I am trying to install subversion for my first time on Mac v.10.2.4. I
have fink installed (updated CVS today). I downloaded the "boot strap"
image 'subversion-r5118.tar.gz' and ./configure and make work fine, but
then when I try

$ clients/cmdline/svn
svn: error: cannot set the locale

also when I try

$ sudo make install
...
subversion/svnversion/svnversion . /repos/svn/trunk >
/usr/local/include/subversion-1/svn-revision.txt
svnversion: error: cannot set the locale
make: *** [revision-install] Error 1

When I start 'Ximian Evolution' it works fine, but on std out:
        Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by C library
I do not know if it is related, but I am very willing to provide any
information that may assist someone helping me.
