Well, I see you're point, so I maybe should clarify...

Anecdotally, I've noticed that open source developers seem to have
much more of a clue than other developers. Many of developers I've
worked with over the years, though very intelligent individuals, and
first rate programmers seem to not have a clue about the tools they
use to actually develop the code their responsible for.

For instance, I had one person, who was supposedly a team lead for a
project who came to me requesting I restore his code from last
night's backups. Usually a reasoable request. However, the
environment we were was using Clearcase for it's SCM solution. This
guy checked out of the main line and moved the data to spare drive
space on his local system and never checked anything back in
FOR FOUR MONTHS!.

The guy wrote great code from what I heard, but he was clueless about
how the tools he used worked. And he had no intention of learning.
He threw a fit when I told him his local workstation wasn't backed up.

I see this type of behavior time and again in the engineering world.
It was this type of scenario I was referring to with the comment
above. Open source development, by it's nature, seems to attract a
much more clueful developer than those who 'do it as day job', so to
speak.

Does that make sense?

I apologize if I offended anyone here, that certainly was not my intent!
(maybe I should have used the term 'user' rather than 'developer'? )
