Did you read any of the list discussion about it today? (I think it's
all linked to from issue #510.)

Uh, no. The code could stay in a halfway-converted state for an
arbitrary amount of time while we figure this out. That would be bad,
both from a maintenance perspective, and for new developers trying to
figure out the APIs.
