Yay!

This is the commit that should say "Fix issue #1037", by the way,
since it's the one that put the changes into trunk. I've tweaked the
log message accordingly, and tweaked 4688 in the complementary way.

Now that this is fixed, 951 and 1087 and 1090 are unblocked.
