We decided there was no need for them to be atomic, as long as they
were continuable. I think this works out best for users in practice,
because people doing large checkouts or updates over an unreliable
link would like resumable behavior.

By the way, I very much like Greg Hudson's thinking that updates and
checkouts should operate the same way, and that if part of making
checkouts continuable is to first fix updates and checkouts to be
essentially the same operation, that's great (haven't asked Nuutti how
*he* feels about that, though :-) ).
