 be good if this were at least documented brokenness - I just did 'svn
 help up' and thought 'hey, this -N option looks good!' - and it did,

Can you trace to see if the fix is trivial or non-trivial? If the
latter, open an issue, and we'll disable -N in updates until it's
fixed.
