Unexpected behaviour yes. Showstopper no.

Sure, when I want to have the date expanded in the document and it
doesn't get expanded, I need to investigate the cause. Maybe you're
right and other people will not be irritated or do not even use the
$Date:$ format. If it will be reported from time to time somebody will
fix it. I for myself have problem either way.
