I'll go with the second solution. I'm committing the buildchecck.sh
change that requires 1.4.3 only on Solaris (some MacOS X person can add
that requirement later, if necessary). I'll add the --release flag and
appropriate magic in a later commit. It seems wrong to require 1.4.3,
say, on Linux just because Solaris needs it.
