Regardless of the rest of this discussion, I think it is time to set a
definite date on 1.0. I believe we're far enough feature-wise, and quite
close to the required stability. Therefore I'd suggest we set a date
now, then make another review of the open issues and keep only those
that can reasonably be fixed by that date. At the same time, declare a
freeze for new features -- say, a month from now -- and concentrate on
expanding the test suite.

Wouldn't you agree that April 1 is an auspicious date for a 1.0 release? :-)
