checkout single file failing

I am having a problem (rather minor) but maybe I am doing something wrong.

When I try to check out a single file from within the repository
I get an error. I can checkout the entire directory but ...

Environment:
  Server: FreeBSD
              Apache/APR head as of this morning (11/29)
              SVN rev 3933
  Client: Windows 2k
              SVN rev 3933

$svn co http://server:81/repos/amccarty/trunk/cplus/gnl/debug.cpp

svn: Error string not specified yet
svn: URL does not identify a collection.

$svn co http://server:81/repos/amccarty/trunk/cplus/gnl/

Checked out revision 331.

hmmm... just realized that "svn cat"
is available. That will work for what I need right now.
