The hand-coded Java bindings are by now woefully out of date (and to
my knowledge, not currently maintained by anyone). Work is proceding
slowly on the SWIG/Java bindings (generated from the C API). We
haven't yet pillaged the hand-coded Java bindings for interface
suggestions; if you have some, by all means send patches!
