It's not that it leaves files lying about -- I can live with the occasional
.tmp file left over after a failed commit, in exchange for the convenience of
having emacs open the file in the current directory.

The annoying thing is that when I commit a log file, emacs saves a *~ backup.
These get left behind, and it's pretty ugly after a while. I guess I could
make emacs disable backups for files that match svn's tmp file regex, but is
it worth it?

I can't remember -- what was the big hullabaloo about when it was decided to
stop just using /tmp ?
