Is that okay, if in actuality it is the parent pool (or its parent,
etc.) being cleaned up?

(I could see the answer being yes or no, I just don't know which. I'm
surprised it's not okay to make allocations in the pool being cleaned,
actually; it seems like it would be easy to make that possible.
Allowing the addition of new cleanup handlers during cleanup is a little
more dicey, and could lead to infinite loops if misused, but it also
seems eminently possible.)
