The old milestone system was dropped for a couple reasons:

1) we needed a "standard" version numbering system
2) the numbers we chose were equal to the milestone: M6 was 0.6.0, M7 was
   0.7.0, etc. Thus, the milestone was redundant

It is interesting to note that we had a 0.10.1 and 0.10.2.

The current problem is that we "locked into" 0.14.x being the alpha releases
and 0.15.x being the beta releases. That was the core mistake. We conflated
release state with the version number.

Now, they've been unlinked, and I think everything will be happy again...
