Dangit, what the heck?!

Karl *tested* my berkeley-db.m4 changes on his redhat box before I
committed. He's has BDB 4.0 installed /usr/local/BerkeleyDB.4.0/. I
watched him run ./autogen.sh; ./configure, and saw four -ldb4 checks
fail non-fatally, and then the third -ldb worked.

How could this have happened? I still don't understand why the logic
is failing. Maybe I'm distracted by the steam coming out of my
ears. :-(
