Following installation instructions fails

Please forgive my newness. I'm just following instructions.

The INSTALL file says:

      After compiling, you will have a large 'svn' binary sitting in
      the tree. Use it to check out a real Subversion working copy:

          $ subversion-rXXXX/subversion/clients/cmdline/svn checkout \
            http://svn.collab.net/repos/svn/trunk svn

          A svn/dist.sh
          A svn/buildcheck.sh
          A svn/HACKING

what actually happens at this point in my Mandrake 8.1 system is:
$ subversion-r3033/subversion/clients/cmdline/svn checkout \
            http://svn.collab.net/repos/svn/trunk svn

subversion/libsvn_wc/adm_files.c:1052: (apr_err=155000, src_err=0)
svn: Obstructed update
svn: revision 3106 doesn't match existing revision 0 in 'svn'

- -----

The actual build of the tarball seems to have been just fine. I have no
idea how to interpret the error messages above :-(

I guess that I'm partly asking for help, but more importantly pointing out
that the instructions don't give any hint that anything like this can
happen, nor what to do if it does.
