Well, I supposed I should mention one thing I do that is probably a little
different (and less safe). I run db_checkpoint on the repos with a -k
value that is slightly smaller than the size of one log file. I also
remove unused log files before and after the backup.

This way, I've never had more than one log file in a hot backup and
consequently, the backup has never been larger than the repo itself.

Whether or not this is a particularly smart thing to do is another matter.
