autoconf 2.53 is extremely broken in many aspects. The biggest
PITA is the autom4te.cache directory that doesn't pay attention
to changed m4 files. There are other subtle regression bugs
that only occur in 2.53. (They changed how they substitute
variables and can override valid @foo@ variables with incorrect
values.)

Avoid autoconf 2.53 at all costs. -- justin
