How do we want to do this, folks? Should Kevin just apply his patch,
and we all check out new working copies (or use his script)? I'm okay
with that, but want to see if anyone has a better idea.

Partly it may depend on exactly how this breaks existing working
copies. Do they break in a nice, clean way where it's clear to the
user that they need to check out again? Or do they break
invisibly... ? :-)
