Actually, for trivial changes that have a high probability of being
safe, I don't run "make check" before committing. It's way
too-consuming. Instead I commit, *then* run make check while I work
on the next thing. If check fails, then investigate/revert/whatever.

Now granted, this blooper is in a whole different class... :-)
