Oh *that*. I have a cron job that goes through and removes those files along
with *~ and other detrius, so I don't pay any attention to them. Out of
sight, out of mind. Since I almost never have anything to do with
native libraries, this was my first shot at writing an extconf.rb.

Right. I understand now. I got the impression that you thought apr-config
was generating the wrong parameters by not adding -lpthread, and that that
was what you were trying to debug.

With your '# Linux needs -lpthread.' code, it works.
