I don't have a preference either way, but I'd like to understand the
point. I don't see why it's advantageous to obscure the information.

Merging the paths would be a cool thing if it the distinction between
repository names and filesystem paths were utterly arbitrary, but
there is a user-visible difference between the two portions of the
path, so unifying them seems kind of meaninglessly cosmetic.
