the colorfilter tool is impressive. There's something for everything out
there in the wild web :) The idea behind the "straight" set was to rely on
shape and colour to indicate the status.

Looks a lot better than the original, but there's no compelling reason to
use a question mark, so you're not limited there. IIRC, the unversioned and
ignored icons from some icon sets were just copied from XP Style a long time
ago and never improved.
IMHO the unversioned icon is absolutely unnecessary, because it just adds
clutter and no information (no icon = unversioned for me ;) ), but people
who use it, may find a prettier icon, that scales properly, helpful.
