I think this would be a bad-move(tm). It is very helpful to have a more or less real time view of the blending to determine the most useful blend-level. Otherwise you have to change-and-guess until you have the desired level. (Of course this should not prevent the mouse from moving if you have a slow computer, but only update the view less often..)
 
I do agree that the blend slider needs some general work. Moving it (at least on my system) triggers some redraw issues where briefly opaque versions of the images are drawn and the title and image-status-box flickers. Also moving the slider farthest to the right does not generate a 0%/100% opacity but more like 1%/99%.
