Hello

Hi folks! (Hi, Karl!)

I'm back, as of last week - you probably noticed. I spent most of last week reading through a summer's worth of dev-list e-mail, and setting up a broadband Internet connection (I wish I'd done that ages ago).

I unsubscribed from the lists in June because I was living on a boat without a radio or an engine, let alone a computer. My friend Andy bought this old yacht and we spent a couple of months restoring it to sailing condition, living on it on land to begin with and then in the water, and then we sailed off over the North Sea to Denmark. I've never sailed across the sea before, and it was - how shall I say? - character building, I think is the nicest way of putting it. It got thoroughly wet inside, mainly because the deck joints and hatches and mast step all leaked when waves came over, and we had gales for five solid days, and when crockery and ballast and tools and anchors were crashing from side to side, it got rather frightening. But finally we reached a safe anchorage and spent the afternoon in the launderette, getting all of our clothes and bedding washed and dried. Then our friend Catherine joined us and we had a pleasanter week sailing to Sweden, and then I left the
m, and various other crew members came and went during the summer as Andy sailed on up the Baltic Sea to Finland and Estonia.

Since then I have gone camping, done a bit more sailing, and been helping to build an Anglo-Saxon long hall, among other things. After all that excitement I was finally beginning to miss the computer programming, and so here I am again. I'm also starting to think about getting a job. My sabbatical is now approaching a year and a half. It's been wonderful.

Well, that cut a long story short. It's nice to be back.

When I saw the e-mail announcing that the book has been published, I went down to the book shop and ordered a copy. It should be with me any day now. Marvellous.

- Julian
