I'm well aware of the Creative Commons license. Are you telling me that
Gentoo *only* allows that one license? At least the Debian project has
a broader set of criteria that allows them to certify that a license is
"free enough":

By "use parts of the book", you mean "copy chunks of it into your own
docs"? Or do you mean "link to the book"?

Regardless, you have permission to do either thing. The license allows
it. We only ask that you give proper attribution.

If you look at the TortoiseSVN project's user manual, they're already
doing this: pieces of the svn book are embedded into their manual.
