I was curious, and the IBM i whitepaper says that they do provide
backwards compatibility, allegedly back to System/38.

I have never used AS/400, but I expected to be interesting because
pointers are 16 bytes long, and conversion between pointers and
integers is very limited. I wonder if they use the additional bits in
the pointer representation to achieve memory safety for C programs,
which would be a pretty unique feature.
