I think file externals is considered by a number of developers as a
mistake. Based on what I've read so far in this thread I think you're
crazy for using so many of them.

I think the long term desire is to replace file externals pointing
within the same repository with something similar to a symbolic link.
But doing that requires repository storage changes that aren't going to
happen quickly. If we had something like that you should get the same
results without the performance issues.
